Planning: Initial Decisions with Audience Response

Our first thoughts: Song "Fund Fetish" by Semz&Zino.

Locations:
  • party
  • date night
  • london at night
  • Driving around in a 'nice car'
(conveying a certain type of lifestyle)

Characters:
  • two boys
  • two girls
  • 'temptation' characters
  • extras
The main message of the video is to convey how in this day and age, it is difficult to be involved in a relationships when there is other people that put it on a plate and often ruin relationships because they can. Although it is the party involved in the relationship that is to fault, it shows how easy it is to get caught up and make these stupid decisions which we later realise won't get us what we want and love.

Feedback:

"Think about the praticality - are you going to be able to film at a party? Are there other alternatives you could use instead?" Elrad, 17
" I think the idea of the "nice car" is great because it shows how you have actually researched your genre and shows you conforming to the conventions of rap/hiphop music videos. It will also make it look very professional." Millie, 17
"If planning to film at night, make sure you plan your lighting and filming times effectively in order to get the best quality footage you can" Megan, 17
" I like the overall theme, it is relatable to teenagers, who listen to this genre of music, it will be very engaging, which is what you want as directors!" Marion, 17

We took in all of our audience feedback when we got to the planning stages of our music video, and made appropriate changes.

PLANNING: mini pitch

The Pitch - what songs we could use:

I think as a group we should go for a song that fits in the grime/rap genre. I think we could produce a video that portrays and man and woman falling in love , with the aspects of the 21st century which makes it difficult for relationships to work e.g. social media and the influence of other people.

I thought these songs could fit the sort of avenue we would want to go down , when producing our music video.

Both artists are unsigned but some what known artists, this may be the most difficult part of trying to use the songs when producing the music videos. However , if collectively as a group we decide that one of them is a song we would want to use i would go about contacting their management or get their serious contact details e.g. email address and ask them permission to use the songs.

If we don't get permissions from the artist then ill set about asking other artists and have back up options to fall back on. If we do get permission i think it would be good to request a high quality version of the track.

Semz & Zino

A post shared by Semz & Zino (@semzandzino) on

  • Considering the success of these types of videos, it would be smart to do a music video about females.
  • The perfect song for this type of music video would be Semz & Zino - Fund Fetish:

PLANNING: MINI PITCH

Euan Emerton:

Singer/Songwriter from Milton Keynes
Genre: Acoustic / Pop

Why did I choose this song?
I chose this song after seeing Euan play at a gig last year. I really enjoyed his stage presence and his voice.
I think this song would be quite challenging however there is a lot that could be done with it.

Possible ideas:

I'd quite like the idea of at some parts of the video that, there could be a band with drums, bass and the lead singer with a guitar due to the genre.
I also would like there to be some sort of love story in the music video, perhaps the boy chasing the girl. I can imagine it being set in the winter, and have locations such as Southbank, with the London Eye all lit, possibly the west end and perhaps winter wonderland or a funfair? I think it should be filmed when dark as I'd love there to be lots of lights in the background. I'd have a lot handheld shots following the couple and a lot of close ups of the female smiling.

Reflecting on AS production work: Use Of Digital Technology

Pre-Production:
During the pre-production process there were many stages that we went through as a group to plan our media product before we could start the production process.

One pre-production process that stood out to be a great use was developing out story board into an animatic. This enabled us to decide the structure of our thriller opening and helped us a huge amount when it came to the production process of filming our thriller; it also allowed us to peactice our editing skills on final cut pro.
In terms of digital technology; our animatic was filmed, edited on final fut pro and and was then uploaded onto you tube which is a social media platform allowing it to be open to the public, that way we could refer to it whenever necessary and also add it into our blogs.

Our Storyboard Animatic

Production:
The production process mainly consisted of filming our thriller opening.

In terms of digital technologies the equipment we used consisted of:
  • Cannon DSLR 650 EOS
  • Camera lenses
  • large tripod
  • small tripod
  • microphone
  • lighting

Below we analysed the strengths and weaknesses of using the Cannon DSLR 650 EOS.

Post-Production:
The post production process was mainly the editing stage.

In terms of digital technology we used programs like final cut pro to edit our footage as well as logo maker to make our production logo and and distribution logo. We also added sound which we made ourselves and also sourced from sound cloud; we added titles and credits as well as uploading it onto youtube, a social media platform.

Arc Isla- In my heart

The artists own video:

Arc Isla are an unsigned east midland based Indie/ Pop band. Their original video for their song 'In my heart' has a rustic feel to it as if the viewer are looking at old recordings of the band. The video contains footage of the band rehearsing, performing and having fun.

What I believe the song is about:
I believe the song is about the speaker being deeply in love with someone however their relationship isn't straight forward, despite them being in 'their head' 'their heart' and them 'falling' for them. The persona/voice is torn between leaving their love or staying with them; however it can also be about a breakup as they say 'where do i wanna go now'.

What I would do in the video:
In terms of footage i would take inspiration from the bands own video of the song and use footage of the lead singer and female and put a rustic effect on the video as if the persona is looking back on good memories of them together. This would reflect my interpretation of the song and its lyrics as well as sticking to the bands original ideas and the indie/ pop genre.

Another piece of footage i would use would be the of the lead singer walking through the streets of London at night, the camera could have a blury focus on the London lights portraying the protagonists confusion reflecting the lyrics 'where do i want to go now".
However the lead singer can also be singing and looking directly into the camera; following Goodwin's theory which will result in the video having a professional look.

From watching the bands original video and other Indie/pop music videos there is often footage of the band performing; so all members are features in the video. This will also allow the audience to feel as if they are at one of their concerts.

In terms of footage I would continue the theme of the protagonist reminiscing on their relationship and would also show footage of the protagonist going through old pictures of them as a couple. I would use Polaroid pictures to continue the rustic feel that the band used in their original video. These pictures could be in the protagonists house, perhaps on their fridge, on their wall or even in a pile.

Research: Hip-Hop Genre

Genre: Hip Hop

Hip hop music, also called hip-hop or rap music, is a music genre developed in the United States by inner-city African Americans in the 1970s which consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti writing. Other elements include sampling beats or bass lines from records (or synthesized beats and sounds), and rhythmic beatboxing. While often used to refer solely to rapping, "hip hop" more properly denotes the practice of the entire subculture. The term hip hop music is sometimes used synonymously with the term rap music, though rapping is not a required component of hip hop music; the genre may also incorporate other elements of hip hop culture, including DJing, turntablism, scratching, beatboxing, and instrumental tracks.
Hip Hop music videos typically are accociated with crime, money and women as it is the culture and in most cases, it is the reality the artists are exposed to.
